Academic Policies

Grading Policy and Procedures

Grades will be issued in accordance with UMass Lowell (UML) policies.  Follow the link below for more information:

http://www.uml.edu/admin/registrar/grades%20and%20transcipts/grading.html

Privacy noteAcademic records are confidential. Faculty may not post grades in a manner which would identify the student.

Timeline for grades:  The TEAMS Academy semester finishes 15 to 20 days after the end UMass Lowell’s semester.  The TEAMS Academy will submit an “incomplete” grade to meet the normal UML semester deadline.  The TEAMS Academy will issue final grades to the UML registrar within one week of the end of the TEAMS semester.

Mid-term feedback:  TEAMS faculty will provide each student with a brief, narrative-style performance summary in the middle of the term.  This informal report will not necessarily include a quantitative grade, but is intended to give the student information to help them improve their performance.  TEAM will send a copy of these feedback reports to the student’s guidance department.

Grade reporting to high schools:  All TEAMS Academy students have signed waivers to allow the UML Registrar and TEAMS Academy administration to provide grade information to the student’s sending high school.  The TEAMS Academy will request transcripts to be sent to local high schools at the same time final term grades are sent to the registrar.  The TEAMS Academy will send a grade summary to the high school guidance department at the same time.

Grades:  The table below summarizes UML’s grade structure.  To accommodate high schools using a percentage format, the TEAMS Academy grade summary will include a percentage.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes and are responsible for all material covered.  Much of the course work for the TEAMS Academy involves laboratory experiments that require extensive preparation and may not be repeatable if you are absent.  Quizzes and exams will be given during class time. A missed quiz, late lab assignment or missed examination will result in a zero (0) grade unless prior arrangements or acceptable written documentation is provided.  Details of the attendance policy follow:

  1. Attendance is required.

  2. Students are allowed one (1) unexcused absence per term but are responsible for all missed work.  If a missed laboratory experiment cannot be repeated due to time, cost, or setup restrictions, the TEAMS faculty has the discretion of assigning a zero or other grade for the assignment.
  3. Additional absences are excused only if the request is accompanied by a Doctor's note or with permission of the TEAMS Academy Director.

Excusable Absences:   This encompasses all situations such as accidents, illness, serious family emergencies, special religious observances, etc.  If you know about a special situation in advance, please notify the TEAMS Academy Director as soon as possible (preferably at least one week in advance).  Students are responsible for submitting all missed work in a reasonable time frame provided by the instructor.  We will evaluate each request on a case-by-case basis, but we want to ensure that this policy is applied uniformly to all students.

Special High School Events:  If there is an important high school event that requires an absence from the UML class, the student must request permission for an excused absence at least two weeks prior to the event.  Permission will be granted at the discretion of the TEAMS Academy Director.  The TEAMS Academy will attempt to accommodate requests for very important, infrequent event.  Students are responsible for submitting all missed work in a reasonable time frame provided by the instructor.

Tardiness:  Students should be on time to class.  Course instructors will notify students of their policy regarding tardiness.

Withdrawal Policy

Withdrawal from a TEAMS Academy course will constitute withdrawal from the TEAMS Academy program.  The TEAMS Academy will work closely with its students to minimize the need for a student to withdrawal from the program.

In the case where a withdrawal is needed, the student must submit a request in writing to the TEAMS Academy Director.  Term grades will be reported in accordance with UML policy.  See the link below for more information:

Here is a key excerpt from UMass Lowell’s web site:

Students who desire to withdraw from courses with notations of W during the period from the eleventh to the fiftieth class day of a semester must file these forms with the Student Records Office no later than the fiftieth class day. Students who do not complete the process of withdrawal by the fiftieth class day will not be assigned course notations of W, will be subject to all instructor course requirements, and will receive final course grades.
