Teaching American History


	Brochure (pdf) Registration Form (pdf)		Leadership in America: Dilemmas and Opportunities is a content-based Teaching American History professional development grant that is open to instructors of American history grades 5-12. This grant provides a meaningful exploration of the entire course of American history through the lives of cultural, political and industrial leaders who are faced with dilemmas and opportunities that have shaped the events of our country’s history. The districts involved are Andover, Greater Lowell Technical High School, Hamilton-Wenham, Innovation Academy Charter School, Lawrence, Methuen, and Tyngsborough. These districts represent all levels and types of educational experiences and represent the demographics of Massachusetts. The content providers are as diverse as the offerings of this grant. The main provider is the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The program aims to appreciably strengthen the districts’ capacity to teach traditional American history as a separate academic subject. Leadership in America: Dilemmas and Opportunities is made possible by the United Stated Department of Education Award. The program content spirals around the overarching theme “Leadership in America: Dilemmas and Opportunities” as participants study the dilemmas and opportunities faced by political, social, and cultural leaders over two centuries of our country’s history. Activities include content based summer institutes, school year content based seminars, book discussion groups, field trips, technology workshops and annual conferences.
