Program Offerings

The program is designed to cover the historic period 1865-the present in year one and “loop back” to the colonial era to 1865 in year two.  This approach will provide the unique opportunity to view history, with its myriad of dilemmas and opportunities, through a backward lens.

The program is designed to train teachers and their students to think and reason like an historian.  To accomplish this the program offerings are firmly grounded in the UCLA National Center for History in the Schools National Standards.  They include:

  • Chronological Thinking
  • Historical Comprehension
  • Historical Analysis and Interpretation
  • Historical Research Capabilities
  • Historical Issues-Analysis and Decision Making

Each module will be presented by a content expert scholar from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Since one of the goals of the program is to inform practice,   emphasis will be placed on how to implement the content into the classroom. The 5 book discussion group sessions will allow for an open dialogue on historical, scholarly work in an atmosphere that will be conducive to collegiality and networking among the participants from the seven school districts.
