The
College Prep Program
Motto:
"Working at Learning"
The
College Prep Program is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts
Lowell and Lawrence High School. Our goal is to engage students in a meaningful
learning experience for the purpose of enhancing their basic skills, critical
thinking and social competencies. More importantly, College Prep exposes
participating students to the college experience.
College Prep is geared toward improving the Lawrence High School students'
chances of competing in a technically advanced society by offering enrichment
classes in the areas of Math, Physical Science, Computer Literacy, and
English Language Arts. Students enrolled in the program attend Saturday
classes during the academic year and spend summers attending classes four
days a week for six weeks.

PROGRAM
OFFERINGS
Academic
Program:
Students participating in the College Prep Program attend academic classes
in the areas of English, Math, Physical Science, Computers, and SAT Prep.
These courses are designed to enhance students' academic skills by engaging
them in a meaningful learning experience.
Tutoring Program:
Recognizing the unique learning styles of each student, the College Prep
Program offers Academic Tutoring. This service is available to all students
needing academic support. Tutoring is provided by peer mentors and/or
University students.
Residential Program:
Senior students have the opportunity to reside at UMASS Lowell for three
weeks during the summer program. Students participating in the residential
program receive free room, board and meals. The residential program provides
students an opportunity to get involved in a great number of academic
and extracurricular activities offered by the University.
Academic Career Counseling:
Through various activities, College Prep students participate in an Academic
Career Awareness Program. Such activities include:
- College Visits
- Multi-cultural Career Day
- Review of College Admissions Standards
- Financial Aid Seminars
- Tour of the UMASS Career Center
- College Planning Handbook
- Academic Counseling
Internship
Program:
Students entering their senior year in high school have the opportunity
of participating in the internship program. All of the senior students
are placed in internships, work assignments and/or research apprentices.
They are assigned to work in a specific University Department or local
Business, with a faculty member or a business partner serving as their
supervisor. The internship component gives students the chance to explore
career interests. At the end of the internship, students are required
to provide an oral presentation of their internship experience.
Extracurricular Activities:
Students have the opportunity to enhance their learning experience through
a variety of extracurricular activities. These activities include:
- Summer Camp

- Yearbook Committee
- Sports
- Arts & Crafts
- Community Speakers
- Cultural Sharing Day
- Talent Shows
Admission
to UMASS Lowell
Students who successfully complete the program, and interested in attending
UMASS Lowell, receive assistance by the Admissions and Student Financial
Assistance offices at the University.
College
Prep is administered by the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Center
for Field Services and Studies.

Young
Scholars:

"Getting a Jump On Success"
The
Young Scholars Program is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts
Lowell and Lawrence Middle Schools. Our goal is to engage students in a
meaningful learning experience for the purpose of enhancing their basic
skills, critical thinking and social competencies. Through hands-on experiences,
the Young Scholars Program intends to help students build self-confidence
and pride through their achievements. The program prepares students at an
earlier age for the intense academic competition they will face when applying
to college.
The Young Scholars Program, also known as the Young Engineers Program
or the Young Scientist Program, was created in 1999 as a part of the University's
commitment to improve Lawrence Middle School students' academic performance
in Math, Science, Education Technology, and English Communication. Students
enrolled in the program attend classes during the summer, four days a
week, for six weeks.
Goals Of The Program:

Program Offerings
Program
Structure:
Forty students are selected to participate in the Young Scholars Program.
The intention of the program is to provide students with a "heads
up" on the grade level that they will be attending in September.
Students attend daily classes, seminars and extracurricular activities which are strongly focused around an integrated
academic curriculum.
Academic
Program:
Students participating in the Young Scholars Program attend academic classes
in the areas of Mathematics, Science, English Communication, and Educational
Technology. These courses are designed to enhance students' academic skills
by engaging them in a meaningful learning experience.

Counseling Program:

Final
Project:
Students are required to work on an "end-of-the-program project".
The planning, development, and completion of the end-of-the-program project
is conducted throughout the six weeks of the summer program. The final
project is displayed by the students during the closing ceremony. Students
have the opportunity to display their work and share their experiences
with other students participating in the program.
